Please do not repost art if you cannot properly credit the artist! Saying “this is not mine” or “i don’t know who the artist is” or “someone help me find the artist” is NOT OKAY. It’s still art theft. Editing the caption later and adding the artist is still not okay because the original version of the post has most likely been reblogged already without the proper credit. The same goes for deleting a post when someone calls you out – if someone has already reblogged it, the post is still floating on tumblr without the proper credit. So if you cannot find the artist, you do not post the art. Simple as that.
This fandom is horrendous at crediting artists. I realise most people don’t mean it but unless you know who the artist is, you do not post stuff that isn’t yours. No matter how much you may want to share it with the world or show people how pretty it is. If you want to do that properly, you find the original post and reblog it from the source so the artist knows you appreciate it.
Reverse google image search tells you 99% of the time exactly who the artist is. It takes 10 seconds! And it the art has a signature too, then it’s just lazy not to try and find the blog and reblog the original art instead of reposting.
Also, REBLOGGING art that’s not properly credited is just as bad. Find the original artist. Reblog the original post!
Even reposting art when you’re crediting the artist is bad enough. At the end of the day you’re still getting notes for something that’s not yours. The artist could be getting those notes instead, and getting new followers, and building their audience so in the future more people get to see their art. Artists can get money from comissions or they can get to work with authors on cover designs or colouring books or whatever. So it’s incredibly shitty to repost their art (on Tumblr or on other sites) and get credit for stuff they’ve worked hours on.
